And welcome to Brad Malone of Victor who was elected to the Library Board of Trustees at Tuesday's Annual Meeting.

Brad is replacing outgoing Trustee Debbie Palumbo-Sanders who is leaving the Board after a five year term.

We want to offer Debbie a great big Thank You for all the dedication and hard work she gave to the library and best wishes in her new position of Victor Central School Board of Education member.

Annual Meetings

We will be holding two annual meetings next week. The library Annual Meeting will be held on Tues., Jan. 24th at 6:30pm in the Malone Meeting Room. This year's meeting includes the election of a Trustee representing Victor. The candidates are Jami Kaplan and Brad Malone. Other nominations will be accepted. This meeting is open to all residents of the Victor School District.

The Friends of the Library will be holding their Annual Meeting on Wed., Jan. 25th at 5:00pm in the Malone Meeting Room. Items on the agenda include a review of past year's activities, a look at the year ahead and election of the officers for 2012. This meeting is open to the public.

Boyds Bears Raffle

Thanks to a very generous donation by Victor resident, Ruth Nellis, we will be holding a monthly Boyds Bear Raffle during the year.

Each month will feature a different bear. Tickets are available at the library and are $1 each or six for $5. Proceeds from the raffles will go to support library programs and activities.

January's Bear is "Mrs. Baybeary". This month's drawing will be held on Jan. 30th.

Booked for the Evening Book Discussion

The first Booked for the Evening book discussion of the new year will be held tomorrow, Tues. Jan. 10th at 7:00pm in the Malone Meeting Room. The Family Man by Elinor Lipman will be discussed.

Booked for the Evening discussions are held on the second Tuesday of the month at 7:00pm. Caleb's Crossing by Geraldine Brooks will be discussed in February. A complete listing of the discussions can be found here.

December Activities

Food for Fines: During the month of December return any overdue items borrowed from the Victor Free Library and pay the fine with non-perishable food items, paper goods or cleaning products. Donations will be given to the Victor-Farmington Food Cupboard and the Serenity House.

Buy-a-Book for the Library: Be a star this month and honor a special person in your life, a child, grandparent, caregiver, with a book donated to the library in their name.

Friends Santa Raffle: The Friends are sponsoring the raffle of a collectable Boyds' "Peppermint Nick" Santa. Tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. Proceeds benefit the library's children's programs.

Sunday Music Concerts

Students from the Hochstein School of Music will be performing. These concerts are free and open to all members of the family.

Babysitter's Training Class

We will be holding a Babysitter’s Training class on Saturday, Nov. 12^th from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm for youth ages 11-16. The cost of the class is $40 and is due on the day of the class.

Presented by EPIC Trainings this course teaches the roles and responsibilities of a babysitter, including care for infants, diapering, feeding, safe play and activities. Participants will learn how to handle first aid emergencies, injuries, illnesses and household accidents. The course fee includes a workbook, first aid trainer pack and a certificate of completion. Participants should bring a bag lunch.

Halloween Story Time

Fall Story Times

Fall Story Times are in full swing this week.

Mother Goose Times for babies 0-18 months are held on Mondays at 10:30. Preschool Story Times for kids ages 3-5 are held on Tuesdays & Wednesdays at 10:15 and 1:00. Toddler Times for little ones 18-36 months are held on Thursday & Friday mornings at 10:30.

Mother Goose & Toddler Times are drop-in sessions, just come and join us. Registration is required for Preschool Story Time. We still have openings, stop in or call us for details.

Tomorrow, Tues. Sept. 13th, we will be holding the first of our 2011-2012 "Booked for the Evening" book discussions. We will meeting in the Malone Meeting Room at 7:00pm to discuss The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe.

Harvard graduate student Connie Goodwin needs to spend her summer doing research for her doctoral dissertation. But when her mother asks her to handle the sale of Connie's grandmother's abandoned home near Salem, she can't refuse. As she is drawn deeper into the mysteries of the family house, Connie is launched into a quest to find out who Deliverance Dane was and to unearth a rare colonial artifact of singular power: a physick book.

Our Hang Around Victor Day Book Sale begins next Friday, Sept. 9th at 12:00pm. This is the last week we will be accepting items for the sale, so get those books, videos, CDs, and DVDs together and bring them on in.

The last day to donate books is this coming Friday, Sept. 2nd.

Workers are also needed for the sale, if you're interested in helping, stop in at the library to sign up for a slot or call 924-2637 to see where we could use the help.

Ready for Back to School?

Your child is getting ready "for" school, is he ready for "after" school? We are sponsoring two safety classes for kids who may find themselves home alone after school. The classes, presented by EPIC Trainings, are Home Alone Safety: When I’m in Charge and First Aid Basics for Kids.

Home Alone Safety, for kids ages 7-14, will be held on Wed. Aug. 31^st from 10:00-12:00. Children will learn the importance of responsible behavior when home alone; what to do when a stranger comes to the door, telephone tips, how to react in a variety of accidents, etc. The cost of this class is $18.00 which includes a Student Workbook, Safety Information Contact Sheet, House Rules Form and a How to Call 911/Poison Control Card.

First Aid Basics for Kids, is for ages 11-16 and will be held the same day, Wed. Aug. 31^st from 12:30-2:30. This course teaches the skills and techniques necessary to prevent, recognize and respond to first aid emergencies including: bleeding control, care for muscle, bone and joint injuries as well as treatment for heat and cold emergencies and burns. This course also helps meet many requirements for several Boy/Girl Scout badges. The cost for this program is $18.00 and includes all supplies and a Certificate of Completion.

The cost for taking the two classes together is $30.00. To register, visit the library or call 585-926-2637.

Hang Around Victor Day Book Sale

The Friends of the VFL's annual Hang Around Victor Day Book Sale is right around the corner! The sale will begin on Friday, Sept. 9th from 12:00-6:00. It will continue on Saturday, Sept. 10th from 9:00-4:00. Monday Sept. 12th will be the wrap-up "Bag Sale".

Donations of gently used books, videos, DVDs, cassettes and CDs are now being accepted at the library during regular library hours. We will not accept text books, Reader's Digest Condensed books, encyclopedias or magazines. If you have any questions about what will be accepted contact the library.

The Friends are also looking for volunteers to help with the sale. If you are interested in helping out leave your name and phone number at the library and someone from the Friends will contact you.

Last Week of the Summer Reading Program

This is the final week for Summer Reading 2011. Get those minutes logged in, put the stickers on your suitcases and visit the prize box one last time by Sat. Aug 13th.

Having Lots of Fun!

The fun continues this summer. We are still having visits from our "Paws for Reading" friends. The schedule for next week was posted this morning. If you haven't had a chance to come in and read with a dog this summer, it's not too late! Stop in and sign up for a slot.

Babies and toddlers had a fun morning last week at Music Time with Tara Sulecki owner and teacher of "Music To Grow On". The little ones and their parents and caregivers sang, danced, played with scarves and musical instruments. This program was part of our Baby Breaks for children ages 0 to 36 months.

We still have a few more programs planned. There will be one more Mother Goose Time, for babies 0-18 months, on Mon. Aug. 1st at 10:30am. There are two more Toddler Times for children ages 18-36 months, one this coming Thurs., July 28th and the last on Thurs. Aug. 4th both at 10:30am.

Kids going into K-Gr. 2 this fall have been fun at our Travlin' Tuesdays. So far this summer we've been to China, Africa, Russia and last week it was Australia. We made platypus visors and boomerangs and had a kangaroo relay race. There are still a couple openings for our visit to Mexico tomorrow and then it's off to India for our final program next week. Registration for next week's program will be posted tomorrow.

A Great Big Thanks!

To everyone who helped to make this year's Spring Used Book Sale a huge success. Thanks to everyone who donated books, without you there'd be no sale! Thanks to all the workers; those who sorted the books, set up for the sale, worked at the sale and cleaned up afterwards. It takes a lot of hands.

This year we made $2562.55 at the sale. These funds will be used to support the Friend's "Katie Cody Memorial Dollars for Scholars Scholarship", the library's Summer Reading Program as well as many other youth programs.

The next sale will be held in September during Hang Around Victor Day. If you didn't get your book donations to us for the spring sale, we'll be accepting donations again in August.

Evergreen and OWWL Down Tonight

Spring Used Book Sale

Youth Input Needed

Between now and May 14, the Canandaigua, Geneva and Victor communities will be holding SUPs, “Speak Up Sessions”, to hear youth voices, the first step in community change.

We will be hosting three of these sessions. The first one will be held this coming Monday, Apr. 25th. Kids ages 13 to 15 are invited to come share their thoughts and opinions about what it's like to be a teen in Victor/Farmington from 5:30 to 6:30. Kids 16 to 20 will be getting together from 7:00 to 8:00. The other sessions will be held on Wed. May 4th and Thurs. May 5th.

Minute to Win It Tomorrow!

GASLAND

In 2009, filmmaker Josh Fox learned his land was on top of the Marcellus Shale, a giant reservoir of natural gas. He was offered $100,000 to lease his land for a new method of drilling developed by Halliburton called hydraulic fracturing. Part mystery and part travelogue, GASLAND documents Josh's cross-country odyssey to find out if the controversial process of "fracking" was actually safe.

The library will be showing GASLAND on Wed., Apr. 20th at 7:00pm in the Malone Meeting Room. There will be a brief discussion following the film.

National Library Week Activities

Next week, April 10th - 16th is National Library Week. We've got something planned for everyone. We hope you'll stop by and celebrate with us.

On Sun. Apr. 10th at 2:30pm, the Eastman Woodwind Quintet will be performing "Peter and the Wolf" at our Sunday Music Concert. This is a wonderful way to introduce children to the magic of music. The program is free and open to all ages.

On Mon. Apr. 11th at 7:00pm we will be holding a Family Story Time. Join us and some special surprise guests for a program featuring our favorite stories. We invite you to bring along one of your favorites to share too.

On Wed. Apr. 13th at 7:00pm, Farmington resident Reg Neale will be presenting a program on the History of Farmington. He will discuss his recently published a book, "Farmington" and will have copies for sale at the program.

Also this week we will be holding our annual National Library Week Buy-a-Book campaign. Newly published children's books will be on display. We encourage you to look them over and choose one to buy for the library. Bookplates will be put in all the books purchased and you can be the first one to check it out! It's a great way to show how much you love the library and books.

Final Nutriton Lecture

Time Management for Small Business Owners

The College at Brockport Small Business Development Center, the Victor Free Library, the Victor Local Development Corp. and the Victor Chamber of Commerce are sponsoring a free program on Thursday afternoon, March 24th from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the library's Malone Meeting Room.

David Denz, Certified Business Advisor, will present Time Management for Small Business Owners. This free program will cover tips and tricks for small and micro business owners on how to get more done, grow your business, and reduce stress. Whether you are a "one (wo)man show" or have a few employees, you CAN accomplish your daily goals.

The first program will be held Sunday, Feb. 27th at 2:30pm in the library's Malone Meeting Room. The University of Rochester's String Quartet, Quartessential will present the program.

Nutrition Lecture Series

Come learn the basics of whole food nutrition at a lecture series presented by Dr. Cheyenne Fralick. Topics will include vitamin basics, minerals, amino acids, and exercise nutrition.

Library Board of Trustees Annual Meeting

The annual meeting of the Board of Trustees will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 25th at 6:30pm. The meeting will be held in the Malone Meeting Room and is open to the public.

New Video Game Collection

Thanks to a generous donation from the Victor Walmart, we have started a video game collection.

Last year we conducted a survey of our patrons asking about formats and titles. At that time the clear winner was the Wii format. So the first collection of video games we have purchased are for the Wii.

The new games are: Boom Blox Bash Party, Carnival Games, Game Party 3, Lego Batman, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones 2 and Star Wars, Madden NFL10, Mariokart, NBA2K10, Pirates Plundarrr, Scooby Doo First Frights, Sonic Sega All-Stars, Spongebob's Boating Bash, Super Mario Brothers Wii, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Toy Story 3, Ultimate I Spy and Wii Resort.

These games have a one week loan period and a limit of two per family. They can be reserved online or by stopping in at the library.

This is just the beginning of the new gaming collection. In the future we will be purchasing more games and in different formats. We welcome your suggestions. Look for the suggestion box next to the games and let us know what you'd like to see us get.

School Break Movie

Looking for something to do with the kids on their Martin Luther King school break? We will be showing the movie, How to Train Your Dragon on Monday, Jan. 17th at 10:00am in the Malone Meeting Room.

Hiccup is a Viking teenager who aspires to hunt dragons, but doesn't exactly fit in with his tribe's longstanding tradition of heroic dragon slayers. His world gets turned upside down when he encounters a dragon that challenges him and his fellow Vikings to see the world from an entirely different point of view.

This program is free and open to the public.

We will be showing the movie Emmet Otter's Jug Band Christmas. After the movie we will be making some holiday greeting cards to send residents of local nursing and veteran homes.

Be a Star ... Buy-a-Book for the Library!

Honor that special person in your life, a child, grandparent, caregiver with a book donated to the library in their name.

We invite you to come in and look over our display of recently purchased children's books. Choose one (or more) that you would like to buy for the library. A bookplate dedicating your gift will be put in each book purchased and you can be the first one to borrow the book. We can also send a gift acknowledgment to your special person if you wish.

Buy-a-Book donations are tax deductible and will be on display until Dec. 20th.

Food for Fines

It's that time of year again when you can do something good for both the library and the community.

During the month of December return any* overdue library materials and pay the fine with non-perishable food items, paper goods or laundry and cleaning products.

Sunday Music Program

This Sunday's Music at the Library program will feature music and dance students from the Hochstein School of Music. In addition to instrumental performances, children in the audience will be taught some basic dance movements to accompany a story telling segment.

The afternoon promises to be a great opportunity for kids and adults to enjoy a taste of music and dance.

OWWL's New Look

Well, we made it through the change and are still standing, and smiling - most of the time!

We appreciated your patience with our limited services while we we switching our databases last week and still ask for your patience while we get used to the new software. Everyday gets a little better and we get a little more knowledgeable. In a couple of weeks it will be second nature to us.

We hope you've gone into the catalog and looked around, there are changes on your side too. There are a lot more search options available to you and some some ways to edit your account to make accessing it easier.

We encourage you to take a look at the Help section on main OWWL search page. It's located at the bottom right hand side of the page just underneath the blue search box. There's a lot of information for you there. If you haven't looked at it yet, we encourage you to check it out.

Please let us know if we can help you in anyway getting used to this new software. Give us a call or stop in for a quick overview.

Please note: At this time the email due date reminder service isn't working. It will be restored, but right now we don't know exactly when. If you're unsure when your items are due you can access your account from the OWWL search page or give us a call and we can tell you.

Changes Are Coming!

As you may have already heard, the OWWL system is migrating to new software next week. We will be open but will have limited services. Here are somethings to keep in mind to help make the transition easier for all of us.

You MUST have your library card to borrow things beginning Oct. 4th. We will not be able to look up your record during this transition period.

The OWWL catalog will not be not be available and no holds can be placed from Oct. 4th through 6th and holds will not be filled during these days.

No items are due between Oct. 4th and 7th. We won't be able to return materials during this time, so we would prefer that you not return any items until after Oct. 8th if possible. We won't be able to renew materials during this period either. We recommend you renew items you still need BEFORE Oct. 2nd or AFTER Oct. 8th.

If you have borrowed items directly from another library, PLEASE return them to that library. We won't be able to return them until after Oct. 8th and don't have room to store them.

We won't be able to issue new cards or replace lost cards from Sept. 29th - Oct. 8th.

Story Times are canceled next week.

Internet access will be available at the public computers.

Thanks for your patience and understanding during this transition period. We are excited about the new changes and hope you will be too!

Hang Around Victor Day Book Sale

The Friends are holding their annual HAVD Book Sale in the Malone Meeting Room. We have a HUGE assortment of books, videos, audio books and other great things for sale.

The sale will open at 9:00 on Saturday morning and will close at 4:00pm.

If you can't make it on Saturday the sale will continue on Monday during regular library hours with the $3.00 Bag Sale.

Calling all Shakespeare Fans

Join "The Friends of William", a reader's theater coming together this fall to read Shakespeare's Othello.

The group will meet on Wednesday evenings from 7:00- 8:30 in the library's Malone Meeting Room. They will read one act a week starting with an introduction and ending with a final discussion. The program will begin on Sept. 22nd and end on Nov. 4th.

Hang Around Victor Day Book Sale

It's almost time for the the Friends of the VFL's annual Hang Around Victor Day Book Sale. This year the sale will begin on Friday, Sept. 10th from 12:00-6:00. It will continue on Saturday, Sept. 11th from 9:00-4:00. Monday Sept. 13th will be the wrap-up "Bag Sale".

Donations of gently used books, videos, DVDs, cassettes and CDs are now being accepted at the library during regular library hours. We will not accept text books, Reader's Digest Condensed books, encyclopedias or magazines. If you have any questions about what will be accepted contact the library.

The Friends are also looking for volunteers to help with the sale. If you are interested in helping out leave your name and phone number at the library and someone from the Friends will contact you.

Summer Reading Registration Right Around the Corner!

Registration for the 2010 Summer Reading Program begins on Monday, June 21st. This summer kids who join the Reading Clubs will be keeping track of their reading online. Each reader will have their own Summer Reading Home Page. Here they'll keep track of the minutes they read, write reviews of books they read and lots of other fun things. Registration for the summer reading clubs will be done online too. More information on the summer reading clubs can be found here.

We will also be having a variety of Activity Days for kids of all ages. Story times, craft programs, book discussions and movie days are some of the activities planned. Registration for these programs will be held at the library. More details on these programs can be found here.

All programs will begin the week of June 28th.

Celebrate Earth Day at the Library This Week

We invite you to join us in celebrating Earth Day at the library all this week. Libraries are famous for "Reducing, Reusing & Recycling".

Save a tree and Reduce by borrowing rather than buying that new book you heard about. Go one step further and Buy-a-Book for the library and then share it with others.

Reuse a previously read book by coming to our Used Book Sale this weekend and stocking up on some great titles!

Recycle your old books by donating them to the sale. Tomorrow is the last day we will be accepting books for the Spring Sale. We will be accepting donations again in Aug. for the "Hang Around Victor Day Sale".

Just a reminder.... the Friends' Spring Used Book Sale will begin held next weekend. This is the last weekend we will be accepting donations for the sale. The last day for any donations is Tues. Apr. 20th. So if you've got some things you want to donate, this is the weekend to get them together!

We are also still in need of volunteers to work set-up, the sale itself and clean-up. If you are interested in helping call the library at 924-2637.

The last of our Sunday Afternoon Music series will be held this Sunday, March 29th at 2:30pm. Students from the Lyric Music Academy, located in Farmington, will be presenting the program. The program will feature performances by the Lyric String Ensemble and the Lyric Mignon Ensemble.

Annual Meetings

You may not realize it, but you just may be a member of the Victor Free Library Association. You're a member if you reside in the Victor Central School District. As a member of the Library Association you are welcome to attend the annual meeting on Tues., Jan.26th.

At this meeting the 2009 reports of the Director, Youth Services Specialist, Friends of the VFL and the Board of Trustees will be presented. Also at this meeting, one trustee from the Town of Farmington will be elected.

The meeting will be held at 6:30pm in the Malone Meeting Room. It will be followed by the monthly meeting of the Board of Trustees at 7:00pm.

On Wed., Jan. 27th at 5:30pm, the Friends of the VFL will be holding their annual meeting. At this meeting the past year's activities will be reviewed, the activities for 2010 will be discussed and the President, Secretary and Treasurer will be elected.

This meeting is open to all Friends members and any members of the public who are interested in finding out about this very valuable support group.
